One of the leading flag bearer aspirants for the All People’s Congress (APC) party Dr Richard Konteh has consolidated ties with Bombali district traditional leader.
Dr. Konteh, a figure revered as the “Unifier,” made an unannounced visit to three Paramount Chiefs in the Bombali district, fostering both admiration and logistical concerns. The visit, which was described by Dr. Konteh as a deliberate act of humility and respect, took him to Chief Kandeh Nkpagaa of Ngowahun Chiefdom, Chief Kandeh Kiha of Gbendembu Chiefdom, and Chief Kandeh Finor of Magbaimba Ndohahun Chiefdom.
Speaking to the chiefs, Dr. Konteh explained the purpose of his surprise call, noting that it was out of consideration for the chiefs’ schedules and to avoid placing unnecessary burdens on them. He rhetorically asked, “Is there a need for a son to announce his visit to the father?” – a sentiment that underscored his familiarity and community-oriented approach.
Despite the lack of prior notice, Dr. Konteh was warmly received by all three Paramount Chiefs. However, the unplanned nature of the visit presented challenges for some. Chief Kandeh Kiha of Gbendembu Chiefdom recounted how he had to leave his farming activities at Makorkoi and rush to Gbendembu town upon hearing of the visit.
Chief Kandeh Nkpagaa of Ngowahun Chiefdom expressed gratitude for the visit but emphasized the importance of prior notification for future engagements. “Even though you are our son, giving us notice of your coming would allow us to prepare better for your reception,” he noted. Similarly, Chief Kandeh Finor of Magbaimba Ndohahun Chiefdom shared his desire to reciprocate Dr. Konteh’s respect and generosity by ensuring a more organized welcome in the future.
Acknowledging the concerns raised by the chiefs, Dr. Konteh responded with humility, reiterating his intention to avoid causing inconvenience. He apologized for any difficulties his unannounced visit might have caused and assured the chiefs that he would provide ample notice for future visits.
He further requested the chiefs to convey his apologies to their communities, noting that many residents would likely hear about his visit afterward. Dr. Konteh’s gesture underscored his commitment to maintaining strong relationships with traditional authorities and their communities.
Dr. Konteh’s visit is part of his broader effort to strengthen ties with traditional leaders and reaffirm his role as a unifying figure within Sierra Leone. His approach reflects an understanding of the critical role Paramount Chiefs play in governance, community cohesion, and development.
By personally visiting these leaders, Dr. Konteh demonstrated respect for their authority and a willingness to engage directly with the custodians of culture and tradition. His interactions with the chiefs highlighted his dedication to fostering dialogue and mutual understanding.
Dr. Konteh’s outreach to the Bombali Paramount Chiefs reinforces his reputation as a leader who values personal connections and grassroots engagement. His ability to navigate both formal and informal spaces has earned him widespread admiration as a unifier.
As Dr. Konteh looks to the future, his commitment to maintaining strong relationships with traditional authorities and their communities will likely continue to shape his approach to leadership. His promise to adjust his visitation practices to accommodate the needs of the chiefs demonstrates his willingness to listen and adapt—a hallmark of effective leadership.
Through his unannounced visits, Dr. Konteh has reminded Sierra Leoneans of the enduring importance of humility, respect, and unity in building a better future for all.
