The alleged incident involving Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Hassan Bangura, is indeed alarming and raises serious concerns about the diplomatic relations between Guinea and Sierra Leone.
It is alleged that huge amount of substance suspected to be “cocaine” was discovered in one of the Embassy’s official vehicles.
And it’s also alleged that the Ambassador’s official driver was caught with a physical cash of 2, 000 US dollars in one of the Embassy’s utility vehicles.
Diplomatic immunity, as outlined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, typically protects Ambassadors from prosecution and detention. However, the Convention also emphasizes the importance of respecting local laws and regulations.
As it stands, Conakry may declare Ambassador Bangura persona non grata, if found guilty, effectively expelling him from Guinea; or Freetown may recall him immediately to mitigate diplomatic tensions.
The incident may strain relations between Guinea and Sierra Leone, potentially impacting bilateral cooperation.
