Sierra Leone’s national football team, Leone Stars, will face a daunting challenge as they take on Egypt’s Pharaohs in Cairo today March 25, 2025, in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Despite the formidable opponent, Sierra Leoneans are optimistic that their team has what it takes to secure at least a point, if not a historic victory, in this crucial match.

Leone Stars head into this match with newfound confidence following their impressive 3-1 victory over Guinea-Bissau last week. The win was a much-needed boost for the team and its supporters, showing that they have the strength to compete with some of Africa’s top teams. Mohamed Kallon, the newly appointed head coach, has been widely praised for revitalizing the squad, instilling discipline, and bringing a wealth of experience to the team. Kallon, who has experience in playing and coaching in European competitions, is expected to bring tactical acumen and strategic changes that could catch the Pharaohs Squad.

Kallon’s influence has already been felt within the squad, as the players appear more focused and determined to make a mark on the international stage. Fans are hopeful that his leadership can help unlock the team’s full potential and make them a formidable force in the qualifiers.

Many supporters believe that the match against Egypt will be a defining moment for the Leone Stars as they aim to prove that they can compete with Africa’s footballing giants.

One of the key factors contributing to this optimism is the Leone Stars’ recent performances in the qualifiers, where they have shown resilience and a strong fighting spirit. Despite being ranked lower than Egypt, the team has managed to secure important results in the past, demonstrating that they are capable of challenging stronger teams. The victory against Guinea-Bissau highlighted the team’s attacking prowess, and fans are eager to see them replicate that form against the Pharaohs.

While Egypt is undoubtedly a powerhouse in African football, with a rich history of success in continental and global competitions, Sierra Leoneans are hopeful that the pressure of playing at home in Cairo could work to their advantage. The Pharaohs might underestimate Leone Stars, which could give Sierra Leone a chance to capitalize on any mistakes and spring an upset.

The supporters’ optimism is also fuelled by Leone Stars’ unity and resolve. With players like Musa Tombo, Abu Diaby, Kei Kamara, and Alhassan Kamara, Sierra Leone has a core group of experienced and talented footballers who are ready to rise to the occasion. Their previous experiences in international competitions, coupled with the young blood introduced by Kallon, offers a well-balanced mix of passion and expertise.

As the match approaches, Leone Stars have not only earned the respect of their fans but also the belief that they could cause an upset in Cairo.

While the task ahead is monumental, the Leone Stars’ fighting spirit and recent performances have given their supporters plenty of reasons to be hopeful for a positive result in this World Cup qualifier.
