In a landmark operation that underscores the power of international cooperation, authorities in Sierra Leone have successfully apprehended two Guinean nationals suspected of involvement in an alleged child theft case. The suspects, who fled Guinea for Sierra Leone in the aftermath of the incident, were arrested by the Sierra Leone Police in a seamless cross-border operation. On April 3, 2025, the two suspects were handed over to Guinean authorities in a significant demonstration of collaboration between the national law enforcement agencies of both countries.
The operation at the Gbalamuya Work Station, near the border of Sierra Leone and Guinea, was executed by the National Central Bureau (NCB) of the International Policing Organization, known as Interpol. The NCB in Freetown played a pivotal role in coordinating the arrest and facilitating the suspects’ transfer back to Guinea. It was a powerful example of how international policing efforts can quickly and effectively address cross-border criminal activities, particularly in sensitive cases like child theft.
Leading the handing-over on the Sierra Leone side was Detective Inspector Stella Sarah Kargbo, a seasoned officer with extensive experience in international law enforcement coordination. She was joined by Detective Police Constable Mohamed Mansaray and Police Constable Joseph, both worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth and lawful transfer of the suspects. Together, the team ensured that all necessary documentation was thoroughly processed, aligning with both Sierra Leonean and Guinean legal protocols.
Representatives from the Guinean Interpol NCB were on hand to receive the suspects and ensure that the handing-over was executed according to international standards. They expressed their appreciation for the professionalism displayed by their Sierra Leonean counterparts throughout the operation.
A representative from the Kambia Division Local Unit Command in Sierra Leone was also present at the scene, tasked with obtaining copies of the documentation for further processing within Sierra Leone’s legal system, a step that ensured all actions taken by the Sierra Leone Police were in full compliance with both national and international legal requirements.
In a heartening development, the child victim at the center of the alleged theft case has been safely reunited with parents after a thorough medical evaluation confirmed the child’s well-being.
The successful recovery of the child represents the culmination of a month-long investigation, demonstrating the tangible benefits of international cooperation in addressing complex and sensitive criminal matters.
Authorities from both Sierra Leone and Guinea have praised the operation, which exemplifies the strength of cross-border collaboration. Interpol’s NCB Conakry expressed their gratitude for the swift action taken by Sierra Leone’s law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the importance of such partnerships in combating transnational crime and protecting vulnerable children.
Detective Inspector Kargbo highlighted the significance of the operation, stating, “This is a testament to the power of collaboration. Our work with the Guinean police and Interpol has ensured that justice is served and that a vulnerable child is now safe. Cross-border cooperation is essential in today’s interconnected world, and we are proud to have played a role in such a successful operation.”
The operation has also drawn attention to the increasing role of Interpol in tackling cross-border crimes, particularly those involving vulnerable populations like children. International cooperation, the sharing of intelligence, and the swift action taken by law enforcement agencies have proven to be critical in ensuring that criminals do not escape justice due to geographical boundaries.
The successful conclusion of the case serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when nations work together to protect their citizens and uphold the rule of law. For Sierra Leone and Guinea, it is a powerful reminder that in the fight against crime, unity and collaboration are paramount.
