Our client is a Stevedoring Company operating in the Republic of Sierra Leone seeking application from qualified, competent, self-motivated individuals to fill the below position.

JOB TITLE: GENERAL MANAGER

The position will be responsible for the supply of casual labour to the concessionaire of SLPA Container Terminal and the Licensee for bulk and break-bulk operations at the Queen Elizabeth ll Quay and other Ports within the country.

 Qualification and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, logistics, maritime operations, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in the stevedoring industry, preferably in a leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of port operations, cargo handling procedures, and maritime regulations.
  • Financial acumen to analyse data, manage budgets, and make informed business decisions in consultation with the Board. 

Main Responsibilities

  • Operational Management:
  • Direct day-to-day stevedoring operations, including vessel scheduling, cargo handling, stowage planning, and labour allocation to optimize turnaround times.
  • Monitor and manage all aspects of cargo handling, including loading/unloading procedures, crane operations, and yard management.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company safety procedures, actively promoting a safety-first culture among staff.
    • Oversee maintenance and repair of stevedoring equipment, coordinating with maintenance teams to minimise downtime.
    • Participates in and resolve labour grievance issues, as appropriate and in conjunction with the Operations Manager.
    • Business Development and Client Relations:
  • Build and maintain relationships with shipping lines, port authorities, and other key stakeholders to secure new business and retain existing clients.
  • Negotiate company contractual agreements with the Port Authority, Employee Union(s), Customers, and Vendors, as directed by the Board.
  • Identify potential market opportunities and develop strategies to expand the company’s stevedoring services.
  • Ensure adherence to all maritime regulations and port authority requirements regarding safety, environmental protection, and customs procedures.
    • Financial Management:
  • Develop and manage operational budgets, tracking costs associated with labour, equipment, and other expenses.
  • Analyse financial performance data to identify areas for cost optimisation and profit improvement.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to productivity, efficiency, and profitability.
    • Human Resource Management:
  • Lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing team of stevedoring personnel, including supervisors, crane operators, and dockworkers.
    • Recruit, hire, and train new employees to meet operational needs and maintain skill levels and provide recommendations in regard to employee advancement, promotion or disciplinary issues as directed by the Board.
    • Compliance and Regulatory:
  • Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and best practices to maintain operational excellence.
