Freetown, May 13, 2025 (SLENA) – In a continuing effort to support vulnerable populations, the Ministry of Social Welfare has distributed relief supplies to persons with disabilities residing in key government facilities across Freetown.
Each beneficiary received one tarpaulin and two 10-kilogram bags of rice. The distribution targeted individuals living at government-owned shelters located on Wallace Johnson Street (Government Wharf), Grafton, and Ecowas Street.
According to Melrose Karminty, Minister of Social Welfare, the tarpaulins were generously donated by Orange Sierra Leone as part of its corporate social responsibility program. The rice was provided by Caritas in solidarity with the Government of Sierra Leone’s commitment to improving the welfare of persons with disabilities.
Minister Karminty emphasised that many of the beneficiaries reside in inadequate housing conditions, and the tarpaulins will contribute to improving their shelter, particularly during the rainy season. She further disclosed that similar distributions are planned for other districts in the coming weeks.
“This initiative is part of our broader mandate to protect and uplift the lives of persons with disabilities,” she said. “We are grateful for the support from our partners, and we remain committed to expanding this effort nationwide.”
The Ministry’s intervention underscores the importance of multi-sector collaboration in addressing the needs of vulnerable communities and upholding the principles of social inclusion and equity.
