In a groundbreaking move to promote financial inclusion and streamline cross-border transactions, Afrimoney and BnB, a leading fintech and remittance company, have partnered to launch a USSD-based international money transfer service. This new initiative enables Afrimoney users to send money abroad directly from their mobile phones without the need for a smartphone, data, or internet connection.
The service, launched on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, in Freetown, offers a simple, secure, and accessible solution for individuals across Sierra Leone to support their loved ones overseas. The event attracted key stakeholders, media representatives, and partners committed to advancing financial technology in the country.
Speaking at the launch, Mamadou Billy Kolade, Country Head of BnB, described the partnership as a major milestone in supporting the Bank of Sierra Leone’s vision for financial inclusion and digital transformation.
“Today, we are making history once again by launching the ‘Overseas Money’ service. Afrimoney users, whether at home or at work, can now send money abroad effortlessly. This service will not only support consumers but also small business owners and petty traders,” he explained.
Kolade added that the collaboration reflects ambition in action, noting that BnB operates not only in Sierra Leone but also in Canada, the United States, Europe, Guinea, Liberia, Ghana, and across the UEMOA region including Senegal. He further stated that BnB’s footprint spans East, Central, and Southern Africa, enabling seamless remittance services across the continent.
He emphasized BnB’s commitment to making financial services faster, more affordable, and accessible through digital innovations like mobile wallet integration and USSD-based money transfers.
“In Sierra Leone, BnB has become a household name by simplifying remittances and reducing the long journeys people once made to collect funds. Our extensive agent network whether in Freetown or rural areas, is always ready to assist. He noted that the service would help families pay tuition fees, purchase goods from neighboring countries, and support relatives living abroad.
