Opposition Chief Whip, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, has strongly criticized the increasing cases of drug trafficking and money laundering in Sierra Leone, referencing the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

He expressed grave concern that Sierra Leone is being used as a transhipment hub for drugs from South America and Asia to Europe. According to him, this has severely tarnished the country’s international image, often leading to discrimination and intimidation of Sierra Leonean citizens abroad.

Opposition Chief Whip questioned the President’s frequent international travels, which he claims were initially justified as efforts to restore the country’s image. However, he pointed out that the current situation reflects a stark contrast, with the country’s reputation now at greater risk than ever.

He further argued that these trips have brought no tangible benefits and appear to be a misuse of taxpayers’ money, especially while ordinary citizens continue to suffer. “This is not the change the people voted for,” he stressed, describing the current state of affairs as a betrayal of public trust.

Opposition Chief Whip also raised allegations about the President’s reported ties to Jos Leijdekkers, one of the world’s most notorious drug dealers. He warned that such associations jeopardize the peace and stability of the nation. Despite efforts by the Dutch government to extradite the fugitive, he accused the current administration of being unwilling to cooperate, for reasons known only to them.

He went on to express deep concern about the widespread use of harmful substances in Sierra Leone, stating that drug abuse has become rampant among the youth, claiming lives and destroying communities. “There is no village, town, or city in this country that is not affected by drug addiction and trade,” he emphasized.

Opposition Chief Whip lamented that the future of Sierra Leone’s youth is rapidly dimming, with the government appearing complacent and failing to take decisive action. He further claimed there is growing evidence that some elements within the government may be complicit in the drug trade.

He also revealed that the Drug Law Enforcement Agency is severely underfunded, lacking even basic resources such as transportation, making it difficult for them to carry out their duties effectively.

In conclusion, the Opposition Chief Whip called on the government and international partners to give urgent and sustained attention to the drug crisis, which he described as a “legitimized menace in disguise.”
