Following a successful and transparent electoral process, Edward Marrah has been elected as the new Secretary-General of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).

In a statement to members, Marrah thanked colleagues, reaffirmed SLAJ’s democratic strength, and pledged to uphold the core values of ethical journalism and professional development.

The elections, conducted under the supervision of the SLAJ Election Committee (SLAJEC), were widely praised for their transparency and fairness. “Yesterday, we made history once again,” Marrah said. “We showcased to the world that SLAJ stands as a beacon of integrity and unity.”

Marrah’s statement reflected humility, gratitude, and a strong commitment to service. “This isn’t just a personal achievement; it’s a call to serve, to advance the principles that define us: integrity, transparency, and progress,” he declared.

He paid tribute to his campaign team, thanking them for their resilience, creativity, and determination throughout the election journey. “You were the engine behind this campaign,” he said. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done and the ideals we stood for.”

Addressing the role of the media in Sierra Leone’s democracy, Marrah described journalism as the “heartbeat of democracy,” emphasizing its essential role in promoting truth and protecting the public’s right to know. “The media connects truth to society and safeguards informed public discourse,” he said.

As Secretary-General, Marrah vowed to work in close collaboration with SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara and the rest of the executive body. “I am committed to working side by side with every member of SLAJ to ensure our association remains a pillar of ethical journalism, fostering professional growth and collective empowerment,” he stated.

A central theme of Marrah’s message was press freedom and the safety of journalists. He affirmed SLAJ’s dedication to protecting the rights of media practitioners and standing firm against censorship and intimidation. “Our voices must remain fearless, independent, and protected,” he said. “And we will achieve that together.”

He extended his respect and gratitude to his fellow candidate, acknowledging the healthy competition and the democratic spirit that characterized the election. “Your passion and dedication enriched this process,” Marrah noted. “I look forward to collaborating in unity for the good of our profession.”

Marrah also addressed SLAJ’s future direction, emphasizing inclusivity, innovation, and the development of young journalists. “Looking ahead, we must work in a spirit of inclusivity and action,” he said. “We will embrace innovation, safeguard press freedom, and create new opportunities for the next generation of media professionals.”

He ended his address with a powerful call for unity and forward movement. “The elections are behind us. Now is the time to unite, to respect one another, and to act in the common interest of our association.”

Marrah’s message has been positively received across the media landscape, with many describing his tone as both statesmanlike and forward-looking.

With a renewed executive and a vision for progress, SLAJ is set to embark on a new chapter that builds on its legacy of integrity and defends its vital role in Sierra Leone’s democratic journey.
