NRA LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION INTO AN ATTEMPTED REVENUE DIVERSION; STRONG MEASURES UNDERWAY TO ENSURE ACCOUNTABILITY AND SYSTEM REFORMS
The leadership of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) wishes to inform the public that it has uncovered a concerning scheme involving the collusion of certain staff with external actors—reportedly including commercial bank tellers and unpatriotic citizens—in a deliberate attempt to divert government revenue.
The Authority takes this matter with the utmost seriousness. The Commissioner-General (CG) has initiated a full-scale internal investigation, and she has lodged a formal report with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police. Several individuals are already assisting the CID with investigations. At the same time, all commercial banks have been officially alerted and are cooperating.
Let it be made clear – no stone will be left unturned. The NRA is fully committed to identifying and holding accountable any individuals—internal or external—found complicit in this breach of public trust. The Authority is also undertaking a comprehensive review of its internal systems and processes, and appropriate reforms will be instituted to safeguard government revenue and restore confidence in the integrity of tax administration.
In the interim, all taxpayers are reminded that:
• All cash payments to the NRA must not exceed Fifty Thousand Leones (NLe 50,000.00).
• Payments above this threshold must be paid by crossed cheque or through official electronic payment channels into the designated Government Revenue Account.
Non-compliance with these directives will attract firm sanctions, including suspension of clearance privileges and legal action as warranted.
The NRA remains steadfast in its mandate to assess, collect and account for government revenues. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the NRA through our official channels. The Authority assures citizens that it will continue to lead by example, rooting out corruption and strengthening institutional accountability at all levels.
By Order of the Commissioner General!
