The Sierra Leone Roads Safety Authority (SLRSA) has announced plans to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at major traffic light intersections across the country. The move aims to identify and penalize drivers who violate traffic light regulations, which are a significant contributor to road accidents.
According to the Executive Director of SLRSA, James Bio, the Authority intends to use the CCTV cameras to fine violators during the renewal of their driving licenses. This measure is part of the Authority’s efforts to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents on Sierra Leone’s roads.
Mr. Bio made the announcement while addressing the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). He emphasized that a significant number of road accidents occurring near traffic lights are due to non-compliance by drivers and other road users. The installation of CCTV cameras is expected to help enforce traffic regulations and promote safe driving practices.
In addition to the CCTV cameras, SLRSA is working to improve emergency response along the Wellington-Masiaka highway. The Authority is collaborating with key stakeholders to secure ambulances and other essential medical facilities to enhance emergency response along the corridor.
SLRSA has also made progress in decentralizing its services. The Authority now issues driver’s licenses in Bo, Kenema, Makeni, and Freetown. Mr. Bio assured the Committee that the issue of counterfeit licenses has been addressed, adding that the security features on the current license cards are designed to prevent tampering by any unauthorized printing press.
On the matter of SLRSA’s financial contributions, Mr. Bio confirmed that the Authority has consistently remitted the required 10 percent of its revenue to the Road Maintenance Fund Administration (RMFA) via the Treasury Single Account at the Bank of Sierra Leone. He further disclosed that the Authority is currently drafting a proposal to secure representation on the boards of both the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) and RMFA, as they are not currently represented.
The installation of CCTV cameras and other initiatives by SLRSA are expected to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents on Sierra Leone’s roads. The Authority’s efforts to decentralize its services and improve emergency response are also expected to benefit citizens across the country.
As the SLRSA continues to work towards improving road safety, it is expected that the installation of CCTV cameras will play a significant role in promoting safe driving practices and reducing the number of accidents on Sierra Leone’s roads. The Authority’s commitment to transparency and accountability is also evident in its efforts to address the issue of counterfeit licenses and ensure that revenue is properly managed.
The SLRSA’s initiatives are a step in the right direction towards improving road safety and promoting economic development in Sierra Leone. With the installation of CCTV cameras and other measures, the Authority is expected to make a positive impact on the country’s roads and citizens.
