The historic Havelock Grounds at Fourah Bay College (FBC) erupted with excitement as students launched the much-anticipated Inter-Hall Football Tournament, proudly sponsored by Dr Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, Executive Director of the National Sports Authority.

In an address to students, players, and organizers, Dr Abdulai expressed heartfelt fulfillment—not only in his capacity as the nation’s head of sports but also as a proud alumnus of FBC. He described the tournament as more than just a sporting event, highlighting its deeper significance to student life and campus unity.

“Supporting this tournament gives me joy,” Dr Abdulai said. “Because it’s more than just football. It’s about unity and togetherness, despite the political divide commonly referred to as ‘black and white’ on campus.”

He used the occasion to underscore the importance of student unionism and constructive engagement, reminding students of their responsibility to uphold peace throughout their academic journey. According to Dr Abdulai, peaceful and inclusive student activities are crucial not only for the development of the university but also for grooming future leaders.

“Student unionism is important, but it must be exercised responsibly,” he stated. “Non-violent engagement is a key ingredient to personal growth and national development.”

Dr Abdulai praised the organizers for their initiative in promoting student sports and assured them of his continued support. He emphasized his open-door policy, especially in matters concerning youth empowerment and athletic development.

“My doors will always be open to you,” he affirmed. “Especially when it comes to the growth of sports and youth development.”

The Inter-Hall Football Tournament is set to span several weeks, featuring teams from all major halls of residence. The event is expected to promote healthy competition and school spirit across the Mount Aureol campus. Students from various faculties turned out in large numbers to witness the opening ceremony, which was marked by colorful displays and spirited chants from the competing halls.

Organizers of the tournament also expressed appreciation for Dr Abdulai’s involvement, noting that his presence and support added credibility and momentum to the initiative. “Having someone of Dr Abdulai’s stature not only sponsor but also physically attend and speak to students means a lot,” said one member of the organizing committee.

The Inter-Hall tournament is a longstanding tradition at Fourah Bay College, designed to foster camaraderie among students, build sportsmanship, and identify football talent within the university. With this renewed support from national sports authorities, students are hopeful that future editions will attract even greater investment and attention.

As the opening match kicked off, cheers echoed across the Havelock Grounds, signaling not just the start of the tournament but also a celebration of unity, passion, and youthful energy.
