A Civil society group, Operation We Care for Liberia (OWCL) is calling for the immediate removal of Cllr. Jallah Barbu, as head of Liberia’s Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court (OWECC-L), following comments that suggest a shift in focus away from prosecuting war crimes.
OWCL, in statement noted that during a recent transitional justice workshop in Monrovia, Cllr. Barbu stated that the national anti-corruption court was the “low-hanging fruit,” indicating it may be prioritized over the long-awaited War Crimes Court.
OWCL has condemned the remarks, saying they undermine Liberia’s commitment to justice for victims of the country’s brutal civil wars.
“Justice for war crimes cannot be sidelined for political convenience,” said Bernard G. Goah, President of OWCL.
The group argues that while corruption is a serious concern, it should not come at the cost of delaying justice for atrocities committed during Liberia’s conflicts.
OWCL is urging President Joseph Boakai to immediately dismiss Cllr. Barbu and appoint someone committed to advancing the War Crimes Court.
They emphasize that the War Crimes Court is essential for national healing, reconciliation, and long-term peace.
OWCL also wants the government to send a high-level delegation to the United Nations Security Council to formally request international support for the court.
“The people of Liberia deserve more than rhetoric; they deserve action,” said Goah.
Liberia has faced growing pressure from citizens and international bodies to hold perpetrators accountable for crimes committed during its civil wars from 1989 to 2003.
Despite years of advocacy, progress toward establishing a War Crimes Court has remained slow, fueling frustration among victims and rights groups.
OWCL says it will continue to campaign for justice and accountability in Liberia.
