SLAJ Expresses Concern Over Use of Cyber Law and Press Freedom

Qcell Qcell Qcell

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) wishes to inform its members and the public that journalist Thomas Dixon, Editor of the New Age Newspaper and Chairman of the Guild of Newspaper Editors, was invited for questioning today by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a complaint filed by mining company Leone Rock Metal Group regarding ‘alleged cyberstalking and bullying’.

After several hours of questioning, Mr. Dixon was released on bail of NLe 100,000, pending further proceedings. SLAJ actively intervened to ensure that the journalist’s rights were protected throughout the process.

While recognising the importance of due process, SLAJ expresses concern over the use of the Cyber Security and Crime Act of 2022 in this context, as any perception of intimidation or undue pressure on journalists can have a chilling effect on press freedom. SLAJ urges the Sierra Leone Police and other authorities to ensure that journalists can carry out their professional duties safely and within the law.

SLAJ stands in solidarity with Mr. Dixon and all media practitioners in Sierra Leone, and remains committed to defending press freedom, supporting journalists facing legal challenges, and promoting a media environment free from harassment or intimidation.
