Sierra Leone’s national football team, the Leone Stars, kept their qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive with an impressive 2-0 victory over Ethiopia’s Walia Ibex in Monrovia. The crucial win came in front of an energetic crowd, reigniting hopes that Sierra Leone can secure a place on football’s biggest stage.

From the opening whistle, Leone Stars displayed intent and determination, pressing high and forcing the Ethiopians onto the back foot. Their attacking approach paid off midway through the first half when a well-taken strike broke the deadlock, sending fans into wild celebrations. The goal not only gave the Leone Stars confidence but also set the tone for the remainder of the encounter.

Ethiopia tried to respond with spells of possession and quick counterattacks, but Sierra Leone’s defense remained organized and resolute. Goalkeeper Mohamed Nbalie Kamara once again proved to be a reliable last line of defence, producing key saves to deny the visitors any chance of clawing back into the game.

The second half began much like the first, with Sierra Leone dictating the pace and applying pressure. Their persistence paid off when a second goal was scored, effectively sealing the contest. The strike was met with thunderous applause from Sierra Leonean fans who had travelled to Monrovia to support their team, given that the Leone Stars currently host their international matches outside Sierra Leone due to stadium requirements.

With a 2-0 cushion, Sierra Leone managed the game intelligently, slowing down the tempo and frustrating the Ethiopian side, who struggled to break through a disciplined defensive setup. The final whistle confirmed a well-deserved victory and three vital points for the Leone Stars.

The result leaves Sierra Leone in a stronger position in their qualification group, where every point matters. Head coach Mohamed Kallon, speaking after the match, praised his players for their fighting spirit and commitment. “The boys showed great character today. They played with heart, discipline, and determination,” he said. “This win is important for us; but we know there is still a long way to go. We will keep working hard to achieve our goal.”

For the fans, the win represents more than just three points; it symbolizes renewed belief in Leone Stars’ ability to compete against strong opponents. Supporters in Sierra Leone followed the game passionately, with celebrations erupting in Freetown, Bo, Kenema, and other towns as news of the victory spread.

Football analysts have also highlighted the importance of the win, noting that momentum at this stage of the qualifiers could prove decisive. With matches still to play, Sierra Leone will need to maintain consistency and capitalize on their current form. The upcoming fixtures are expected to be challenging, but confidence is growing that Leone Stars can rise to the occasion.

As the team continues its journey on the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, fans and players alike hope that this result serves as a springboard for further success. The victory against Ethiopia not only strengthens Sierra Leone’s qualification campaign but also reaffirms ambition to make history by reaching the global stage.
