Just this evening, three young Sierra Leonean men were heading to the Congo cross axis with their vehicle. Unfortunately, one Lebanese national name Hussein Sabra, who was impatient, attempted to overtake the traffic light and get away from the queue. However, the young men, had to caution him about the act, admonishing him that his attempted move was a violation of the traffic rules.
What looks like a mild and gentle approach from the young men, transcends into insults, as the Lebanese national could not simply heed the caution. His use of invectives on the young men resulted in a bitter exchange of words from both parties. The Lebanese national, had to pack his bike and went ahead to push the young men, who retaliated by using invectives on him.
Following that, he went to Murray Town junction, where he hired some bike riders and youths, whom he incited to act on his behalf. During the impasse, the young men sustained several injuries, and their vehicle was also damaged as a result.
Surprisingly, when the matter went to the police, the Lebanese national used his influence to get the young men detained, without making any statement to the police. Despite the injuries they sustained, the young men were never granted any medical care and they were compelled to make statements. The instructions given by the Lebanese were exactly what those who were supposed to protect their citizens worked on.
It’s noteworthy that this is not the first time foreigners have been seizing an unfavourable advantage over our fellow Sierra Leoneans. But whenever these matters are taken to the police, our citizens get reprimanded for their own rights.
The question now begs, whether the police are acting on their duties or prioritizing affluence over the rule of law.
