Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, is set to deliver a public lecture on the role of women in political leadership and sustainable development at the University of Makeni (UniMak) Fatima Campus on 18th November 2025.
Titled ‘Feminism in Political Leadership as a Roadmap for Achieving Sustainable Development in Sierra Leone,’ the lecture will highlight the critical role of gender inclusion in governance and national development. Dr. Bio is expected to share insights from her experience advocating for women’s rights and youth empowerment, particularly through her work with the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) and the Hands Off Our Girls campaign.
The First Lady will explore how inclusive leadership can drive social and economic progress in Sierra Leone, focusing on policies and initiatives that empower women and young people. She is also expected to discuss strategies for integrating gender perspectives into decision-making processes and policy formulation to achieve broader national development goals.
Organisers say the lecture aims to inspire students and the wider community to engage actively in civic and political life, while also promoting awareness of gender equality as a key component of sustainable development.
The event is jointly organised by the UniMak Students’ Representative Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It will bring together students, academics, government officials, and members of civil society, creating a platform for meaningful dialogue on the intersection of leadership, gender, and development.
This public lecture is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen advocacy for women’s participation in governance and to encourage young people to become agents of positive change in Sierra Leone. Observers say Dr. Bio’s address is expected to resonate widely, given her longstanding commitment to advancing education, health, and protection for girls and young women in the country.
By sharing her experiences and perspectives, the First Lady aims to motivate future leaders to champion inclusive policies, promote equity, and foster sustainable growth. The lecture will also provide an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and engage directly with Dr. Bio on strategies for translating feminist leadership principles into practical actions that benefit communities across Sierra Leone.
The University of Makeni community and other stakeholders are eagerly anticipating the event, which promises to be both educational and inspirational.
