The All People’s Congress APC held a high level meeting earlier today with a special delegation from the European Union at the Lead Hotel in Freetown to discuss key national political and governance issues. The engagement formed part of ongoing consultations between political stakeholders and international partners aimed at strengthening democracy and stability in Sierra Leone.
During the meeting, discussions focused on the implementation of the Agreement for National Unity, the recommendations arising from the Tripartite Committee, and the ongoing constitutional and electoral reform processes. Representatives of the APC used the opportunity to clearly communicate the party’s views and concerns on these critical matters.
According to party officials, the Agreement for National Unity remains an important framework for promoting political dialogue, restoring public trust, and addressing tensions that emerged from recent electoral processes. The APC delegation emphasized the need for full and genuine implementation of the agreement in order to ensure lasting peace and inclusive governance.
The Tripartite recommendations also featured prominently in the discussions. These recommendations, which were developed to address electoral and governance challenges, were described by the APC as essential to improving transparency, accountability, and fairness within the country’s democratic system. The party stressed that meaningful progress depends on political will and adherence to agreed timelines.
On constitutional reform, the APC reiterated its position that any review process must be broad based, inclusive, and reflective of the aspirations of all Sierra Leoneans. Party representatives highlighted the importance of public participation and stakeholder engagement to ensure that proposed changes strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the rule of law.
Electoral reforms were equally emphasized, with the APC calling for measures that enhance the credibility of elections and rebuild confidence in electoral management bodies. The party noted that reforms should address issues such as voter registration, electoral dispute resolution, and institutional independence.
The European Union delegation reaffirmed its continued interest in supporting democratic governance and political stability in Sierra Leone. The delegation listened to the APC’s perspectives and underscored the importance of constructive engagement among political actors as the country advances its reform agenda.
Both sides acknowledged the role of dialogue in resolving differences and fostering mutual understanding. The meeting was described as cordial and constructive, reflecting a shared commitment to democratic principles and national cohesion.
The APC expressed appreciation for the European Union’s engagement and support, noting that international partners play an important role in encouraging reforms and promoting accountability. The party also reaffirmed its readiness to engage with all stakeholders in the interest of national unity and democratic progress.
The meeting at the Lead Hotel forms part of wider consultations aimed at ensuring that reform processes are inclusive, transparent, and responsive to the needs of the people, as Sierra Leone continues efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions.
