Joint security personnel drawn from the Sierra Leone Police and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces have arrested two men at the Wanjama Police Checkpoint for allegedly attempting to evade routine security screening while in possession of suspected illicit drugs.
The arrest occurred when security officers on duty observed suspicious behavior from two individuals who tried to bypass the checkpoint instead of complying with standard inspection procedures. Their actions immediately attracted the attention of the joint patrol team, prompting officers to intercept and question them.
The suspects were identified as Ibrahim Sama, a resident of No. 36 Musa Street in Bo, and Osman Koroma of Taiama Town. Ibrahim Sama was riding a Victor motorcycle bearing registration number AXC 773 at the time of the incident, with Osman Koroma traveling alongside him.
According to security sources, officers followed established operational protocols after stopping the suspects. A thorough search was conducted on both individuals and the motorcycle. During the search, officers discovered a large quantity of dried leaves believed to be cannabis concealed among their belongings. The substance was seized as evidence pending further examination and confirmation by the relevant authorities.
Following the discovery, both suspects were immediately placed under arrest and transported to the nearest police facility for further questioning. Security officials confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and are cooperating with investigators as inquiries continue into the source, intended destination, and possible distribution network linked to the suspected drugs.
The joint operation forms part of ongoing nationwide efforts by the Sierra Leone Police and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces to strengthen security, curb drug trafficking, and prevent the circulation of illegal substances across communities. Checkpoints such as Wanjama play a key role in monitoring movement along major routes and disrupting criminal activities that pose a threat to public safety.
A senior security officer at the checkpoint, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the arrest demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated patrols and intelligence led operations. He noted that attempts to evade security checks often raise red flags and are treated with seriousness by personnel on duty.
Community leaders in the area have welcomed the arrest, describing it as a positive step toward protecting young people and maintaining law and order. They urged residents to support security agencies by reporting suspicious movements and cooperating during routine checks.
Meanwhile, police authorities have reiterated their commitment to enforcing the law without fear or favor. They emphasized that anyone found in possession of illegal drugs or attempting to undermine security operations will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The suspects are expected to be charged once investigations are concluded and the suspected substance has been officially analyzed. Until then, police have assured the public that all procedures will be followed to ensure a fair and transparent process.
As investigations continue, security officials have called on the public to remain vigilant and to comply with security screenings at checkpoints. They stressed that such measures are in place to safeguard lives and property and to ensure peace and stability across the country.
