A deadly incident struck Cebu City in the central Philippines on Thursday after a massive pile of rubbish collapsed at a landfill site, killing at least one person and leaving more than 30 others missing, according to local authorities.
The collapse occurred at the Binaliw Landfill, a major waste disposal site serving Cebu City. Officials confirmed that a 22 year old woman was killed in the incident after being buried under tons of garbage. Rescue teams also pulled 12 injured sanitation workers from the debris. The injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Authorities fear that the death toll could rise as many of those still missing are believed to be landfill workers who were on duty at the time of the collapse. Rescue operations have been ongoing, but officials have warned that efforts are being hampered by the unstable condition of the rubbish mound.
Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia told local media outlet ABS CBN that rescue teams are facing serious risks as further collapse remains possible. He said the safety of rescuers is a major concern, adding that reaching survivors may prove extremely difficult due to the depth and instability of the waste pile.
Emergency responders including firefighters, police officers, and disaster response teams were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident. Heavy equipment has also been brought in to help clear debris, though operations are proceeding cautiously to avoid triggering additional collapses.
The cause of the landfill collapse has not yet been officially determined. However, Cebu City councillor Joel Garganera, who is also involved in environmental oversight, said preliminary assessments suggest the disaster may be linked to poor waste management practices. He noted that excessive waste buildup and inadequate site management could have contributed to the structural failure of the landfill.
Environmental groups and residents have long raised concerns about the safety and sustainability of landfill operations in the area. Binaliw Landfill has previously been criticized for overcrowding and lack of proper waste segregation, issues that experts say can increase the risk of accidents such as collapses and fires.
Local authorities have ordered a temporary suspension of landfill operations while investigations continue. An inquiry has been launched to establish accountability and determine whether safety regulations were violated. Officials say findings from the investigation will guide future actions, including possible reforms in waste management policies.
Families of missing workers have gathered near the site, anxiously awaiting updates as rescue efforts continue. Some relatives expressed frustration and grief, calling for better protection and working conditions for sanitation workers who risk their lives daily.
The Philippine government has extended its condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and pledged support for rescue and recovery operations. Officials have also reiterated the need for improved waste management systems nationwide to prevent similar disasters.
As search and rescue operations continue, authorities say their priority remains locating survivors and ensuring the safety of responders. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
