Dr Richard Konteh, a flagbearer aspirant of the All People’s Congress APC, has expressed strong confidence that the party will emerge victorious in the 2028 general elections, insisting that lessons from past electoral defeats have been fully addressed.
Speaking on AYV’s Wake Up Sierra Leone programme, Dr Konteh said the APC is repositioning itself to return to power through unity, discipline, and strategic reforms. He stressed that the party is determined to correct previous mistakes and approach the next elections with a clear focus on winning.
“APC will not lose the 2028 general elections. We have learnt our lessons, we are correcting all of our mistakes and we are ensuring that we go into these elections to win,” he said. “It is either we win or we win. No other options.”
Dr Konteh noted that the APC has undergone deep internal reflection following the 2023 elections and is working to strengthen party structures at all levels. According to him, the party’s renewed strategy is anchored on reconnecting with the grassroots, promoting credible leadership, and presenting policies that respond to the needs of ordinary Sierra Leoneans.
On the issue of electoral credibility, Dr Konteh reiterated the APC’s long standing concerns about the independence of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone. He said the party has consistently questioned the neutrality of the commission and maintains that confidence in the current body remains low.
“The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone is not independent, and the APC did take a principle position and said we did not and we still do not have confidence in that Commission as currently constituted,” he stated. “Even in the tripartite arrangement, we made it clear that we do not have confidence in the current Commission and we said they must be replaced.”
He explained that a credible and independent electoral body is essential for peace, stability, and democracy, adding that elections can only be accepted when the process is trusted by all stakeholders. Dr Konteh said the APC will continue to advocate for reforms that ensure transparency and fairness ahead of the 2028 polls.
Dr Konteh also reflected on his personal role within the party and the country, highlighting his experience in managing internal party dynamics and contributing to national development policies. He said his leadership approach has always been guided by stability, inclusiveness, and economic progress.
“Whether managing internal power struggles within the APC or spearheading national policies like the local content law and EITI compliance, my focus has always been on delivering a legacy of stability and economic progress for Sierra Leone,” he said.
He added that Sierra Leone needs leaders who are focused on long term development rather than short term political gains. According to him, strong institutions, accountable governance, and economic empowerment are key to restoring public trust in leadership.
Dr Konteh called on APC supporters to remain united and focused as the party prepares for internal processes leading up to the 2028 elections. He urged citizens to stay engaged in national conversations and to rely on credible media platforms for accurate information.
