Former Chief of Staff under President Ernest Bai Koroma Dr Richard Konteh has denied claims that he fell out with the former president, describing the reports as politically motivated and untrue. Dr Konteh, who is one of the flagbearer aspirants of the main opposition All People’s Congress APC, said his relationship with the former leader remains cordial and respectful.

He made the remarks during an interview on Truth Media where he addressed long standing speculation surrounding his removal as Chief of Staff and his decision to return to frontline politics. According to Dr Konteh, rumours of a personal rift were fueled by political gossip rather than facts.

“I never had any personal problem with my former boss,” he said. “People were spreading stories that I was rising too fast and that the president might even hand power over to me. Those claims were not true.”

Dr Konteh explained that although his removal from office came as a surprise, he fully accepted it as part of the constitutional powers of the president. He stressed that public office was never permanent and that he always understood the nature of political appointments.

“My removal shocked me, but it was the president’s right to hire and fire,” he said. “I used to remind my staff that every day in office should be treated as the last because the job depends on trust and performance.”

He recalled that on the day he was removed, he had been in Parliament engaging members of Parliament and even joking about how fragile his position was compared to theirs. He noted that while MPs have fixed terms, his role depended on daily confidence from the president.

Turning to his political ambitions, Dr Konteh said his experience in public service has equipped him to confront the country’s current challenges. He expressed confidence that his background and leadership qualities position him well to lead the APC and the nation.

“This country deserves better leadership, and my life experience has prepared me to deal with the problems we are facing,” he said.

Dr Konteh said his return to active politics was motivated by a desire to serve Sierra Leone and improve the living conditions of its citizens. He stressed that his vision is based on national unity and inclusive governance.

“I came back to give back to Sierra Leone and to improve the lives of our people,” he said. “If elected, I will serve all Sierra Leoneans and work to unite the country.”

He emphasised that national identity should rise above division, urging citizens to see themselves first as Sierra Leoneans.

Dr Konteh also criticised the current Sierra Leone People’s Party SLPP administration, accusing it of unfair treatment of the civil service and mismanagement of state institutions. Similar claims by opposition figures have previously been rejected by the government.

According to him, the APC needs strong and fearless leadership to regain power and address national issues.

“The APC needs a leader who can unite the party, protect our votes, and provide better governance,” he said. “I am ready to offer that leadership and work toward a better future for Sierra Leone.”

Dr Konteh concluded by reaffirming his commitment to leading the APC to victory in the 2028 elections.
