His Excellency Julius Maada Bio on Tuesday February 18 2026 joined officers and soldiers of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces to commemorate Armed Forces Day at the Hockey Pitch, Wilberforce Military Barracks in Freetown. The celebration was held under the theme Rebuilding the RSLAF through strategic transformation for enhanced national security and development in Sierra Leone.
The colourful ceremony brought together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic and international partner community, traditional leaders, veterans, families of serving personnel and the general public. Military parades, drills and displays highlighted the professionalism and discipline of the armed forces while showcasing their evolving role in national development.
In his keynote address, President Bio paid glowing tribute to the men and women of the armed forces for their loyalty, courage and commitment to the nation. He said the RSLAF remains a key pillar of peace, stability and democracy in Sierra Leone.
“Our armed forces have come a long way in earning the trust of the people and the respect of the international community,” the President said. “Today we celebrate not only your sacrifices but also your transformation into a professional force that supports democratic governance, peace building and national development.”
President Bio said his government remains fully committed to strengthening the RSLAF through sustained reforms, investment in modern equipment, improved welfare and continuous training. He noted that security is closely linked to development and that a strong and accountable military is essential for protecting the country’s sovereignty and supporting civil authorities during emergencies.
“As we rebuild the RSLAF through strategic transformation, we must ensure that professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights remain at the core of our military culture,” he stated. “A secure Sierra Leone is the foundation upon which economic growth, social cohesion and national progress can thrive.”
The President also thanked international partners for their continued support to the security sector and urged them to deepen cooperation in areas of training, logistics and capacity building.
Earlier, the Chief of Defence Staff of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, reaffirmed the military’s commitment to serving the nation with honour and integrity. He said the theme of this year’s celebration reflects the ongoing efforts to reposition the armed forces to meet contemporary security challenges.
“The RSLAF is focused on strategic transformation that enhances our operational readiness and our ability to respond to both traditional and non traditional threats,” Major General said. “We are investing in training, leadership development and civil military cooperation to ensure that we remain a force for peace and national unity.”
He assured the President and the people of Sierra Leone that the armed forces would continue to uphold the constitution and remain apolitical, professional and responsive to civilian authority.
The ceremony ended with a march past by various units of the armed forces and a renewed pledge to protect the nation. Armed Forces Day 2026 served as a moment of reflection, appreciation and renewed resolve for a stronger and more modern military in Sierra Leone.
