I have taken note of recent developments affecting the All Peoples Congress (APC), including the suspension of the party by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), the heavy fines imposed on the APC, and the arrest, court charge, denial of bail, and subsequent remand of the APC Secretary General, Comrade Lansana Dumbuya, at the Pademba Road Correctional Facility.
The APC complied with the fines because we respect the law and the institutions established to uphold it. It is therefore deeply concerning that, despite this compliance, the situation has escalated in ways that raise serious questions about fairness, proportionality, and the protection of Sierra Leone’s democratic space.
As a lawyer and former lawmaker, I have always believed in the rule of law and the importance of strong, independent institutions. But the law must never be perceived—or used—as a tool for political intimidation. Institutions must not appear to weaken legitimate opposition voices. Sierra Leone’s democratic progress depends on fairness, equal treatment, and unwavering respect for constitutional principles.
While fully respecting the independence of the judiciary, I urge all state institutions to exercise their mandates with restraint, neutrality, and integrity. Good governance requires institutions that safeguard democratic participation, not restrict it.
To APC members and supporters across Sierra Leone and the diaspora, I call for calm, discipline, and unity. Let us remain focused, principled, and committed to peace. The APC will continue to stand firm in defense of democracy, good governance, and the rule of law as we work toward a better future for all Sierra Leoneans.
Hon. Chernor Ramadan Maju Bah (Chericoco)
