Flagbearer aspirant of the All People’s Congress, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, has called for tolerance, fairness and strict adherence to democratic principles following the arrest and detention of the party’s National Secretary General, Lansana Dumbuya.

Addressing party supporters, Dr. Bangura urged both political actors and state institutions to reflect on Sierra Leone’s history and the hard lessons learned from past conflict. He referenced the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Sierra Leone, noting that peace and national stability depend on tolerance, fairness and the strength of democratic institutions.

“Our nation’s history and the lessons from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission remind us that peace and stability rely on tolerance, fairness and strong democratic institutions,” he said. “Sierra Leone’s democracy must continue to be a space where political rights are protected and justice is administered fairly and consistently.”

Dr. Bangura emphasized that democracy thrives when the rule of law is applied without bias and when the rights of all citizens are respected, regardless of political affiliation. He warned that selective justice or excessive force in political matters could undermine public confidence in national institutions and weaken democratic progress.

In his address, the APC flagbearer aspirant specifically advocated for the fair and lawful application of bail for Lansana Dumbuya. He stressed that bail is a fundamental legal principle enshrined in the country’s laws and Constitution and should be applied consistently.

“I advocate for the fair and lawful application of bail for the APC National Secretary General, Lansana Dumbuya, in line with established legal principles and respect for the constitutional rights of all citizens,” Dr. Bangura stated.

Beyond the legal issues, he used the moment to call for unity within the APC, urging party members to put aside internal differences and rally around the party during what he described as a critical period. According to him, cohesion within the party is essential for its survival and effectiveness as a political institution.

“I encourage all APC stakeholders to come together in support of our cherished party during this vital period,” he said. “Regardless of any differences, the interest and survival of the APC must remain our utmost priority.”

Dr. Bangura also appealed for calm and restraint, stressing that heightened political tensions should not derail the country’s democratic journey. He called on supporters to remain peaceful and committed to dialogue rather than confrontation.

“This moment calls for reflection, restraint and a renewed commitment to the democratic values that unite us as a nation,” he said. “Sierra Leone’s progress depends on our collective dedication to justice, peace and reconciliation.”

He concluded by urging citizens and leaders alike to focus on healing national divisions, strengthening unity and building institutions that command public trust. According to him, lasting peace can only be achieved when justice is seen to be fair and when democratic values are upheld by all.

As debate continues over the detention of the APC Secretary General, Dr. Bangura’s remarks have added to growing calls for due process, political tolerance and unity within the opposition party, while keeping national stability and democratic integrity firmly in focus.
