A tragic incident has shaken residents of Makeni following the reported killing of a young clinical medicine student, allegedly by her boyfriend, in what police suspect to be a case of domestic violence.
The deceased, identified as Sidratu Bangura, was a first-year student at the School of Clinical Sciences Makeni. According to eyewitness accounts and close associates, the fatal incident occurred on Tuesday, 18 February 2026, in the Makambo community of Makeni.
Preliminary information gathered from friends of the victim suggests that the altercation may have been triggered after Sidratu reportedly asked her boyfriend, identified as Unisa, to end their relationship. Sources allege that the situation escalated violently, resulting in her death. She was reportedly attacked and killed during the confrontation.
The news has sent shockwaves through the academic community and among residents in Makambo, many of whom described Sidratu as a quiet and focused student committed to her medical studies. Fellow students have expressed grief and disbelief over the loss, describing the incident as both heartbreaking and alarming.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody assisting with investigations. The Sierra Leone Police have launched a full investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the killing, including gathering forensic evidence and witness statements.
Community leaders in Makeni have condemned the incident and called for calm while the police carry out their work. They also urged young people to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving disputes, particularly in intimate relationships.
The killing has once again drawn attention to the growing concern over gender-based violence and intimate partner violence in communities across the country. Civil society advocates say the tragedy highlights the urgent need for awareness, counseling services, and stronger interventions to address relationship conflicts before they escalate into violence.
As investigations continue, students and residents alike await justice for Sidratu Bangura, whose life was cut short while pursuing a career in healthcare. Authorities have assured the public that due process will be followed and that anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law.
