The National Publicity Secretary of the All People’s Congress, Sidi Yayah Tunis, has described the party’s just concluded lower level elections as a clear demonstration of growth and commitment to internal democracy.

Speaking in an interview on Wake Up Sierra Leone, Tunis said the process recorded impressive participation from party members across the country, reflecting renewed confidence in the APC’s internal structures and decision making processes.

According to him, the elections were unique because they allowed the full participation of grassroots members at every level of the party. He explained that unlike other internal exercises where voting is restricted to delegates, the lower level elections give all qualified members the opportunity to vote. “This is the only election wherein the entire membership of the party votes,” Tunis said.

He noted that any member who has spent at least one year in the party and is fully paid up is eligible to participate in the voting process. This, he said, has helped to strengthen ownership of the party among supporters and encouraged greater involvement at the community level.

Tunis further revealed that party officials witnessed large crowds at polling centers nationwide, with members patiently queuing to cast their ballots. He described the scenes as encouraging and inspiring, noting that such turnout is a positive sign for the future of the party. “For us, it was amazing to see huge crowds in various places queuing up to exercise their internal democratic right,” he added.

The APC spokesman said the peaceful conduct of the elections also underscored the party’s commitment to democratic values and discipline. He praised party members for conducting themselves responsibly throughout the process and respecting the rules governing the elections.

He emphasized that the outcome of the lower level elections would help strengthen the party’s base and prepare it for future national engagements. According to him, a strong and democratic foundation at the grassroots level is essential for building unity and cohesion within the party.

Political observers say the successful completion of the lower level elections could boost the APC’s internal credibility, especially as political parties in Sierra Leone face increasing scrutiny over transparency and inclusiveness. High participation at the grassroots level is often seen as a key indicator of internal democracy and organizational strength.

Tunis concluded by assuring party supporters that the APC leadership remains committed to improving internal democratic practices and ensuring that members continue to have a voice in decision making. He said the party would build on the momentum generated by the elections to further engage supporters and consolidate unity across the country.

The lower level elections form part of the APC’s broader internal reform efforts as it positions itself for future political contests in Sierra Leone.
