Former Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hon Sidi Mohamed Tunis, has joined the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day 2026, paying tribute to the strength, resilience and invaluable contributions of women within his constituency and across the nation.
In a message marking the international observance, Hon Tunis emphasized the importance of recognizing the role women continue to play in shaping families, communities and national development. He noted that the day serves as a reminder of the need to promote equality, protect the rights of women and girls and create opportunities that allow them to reach their full potential.
Reflecting on this year’s campaign theme, “Give to Gain,” the former ECOWAS Parliament Speaker stressed that investing in women remains one of the most effective ways to build stronger and more prosperous societies. According to him, providing women with access to education, economic opportunities, leadership roles and respect within society creates lasting benefits that extend beyond individuals to families and communities.
He explained that when women are empowered and supported, they contribute meaningfully to economic growth, social stability and national progress. Hon Tunis therefore encouraged institutions, community leaders and citizens to continue supporting initiatives that strengthen the position of women in society.
Hon Tunis also referenced the United Nations theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls.” He noted that the theme challenges governments, organizations and individuals to move beyond statements and take practical steps that protect women’s rights and promote justice.
According to him, meaningful progress toward gender equality requires deliberate action, sustained commitment and policies that address barriers faced by women and girls in various sectors of society.
He further praised the women of his region for their determination and dedication, describing them as key drivers of social and economic development. From leadership roles and entrepreneurship to professional work, caregiving and community service, he said women continue to make significant contributions that help strengthen society.
Hon Tunis acknowledged that many women have continued to overcome challenges while remaining committed to supporting their families and communities. Their efforts, he said, deserve recognition, respect and continued support.
He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for policies and programs that empower women and create opportunities for girls to grow, learn and succeed. He stressed that building an inclusive society where women and girls can thrive must remain a shared responsibility.
As the world marks International Women’s Day, Hon Tunis called on everyone to work together in promoting the rights, dignity and potential of every woman and girl, adding that a just and progressive society depends on the empowerment of women at every level.
He concluded by wishing women in Sierra Leone and around the world a meaningful and inspiring International Women’s Day celebration.
