Sierra Leonean gender advocate Florence Katta Sesay is amplifying the voices of women from the grassroots to the global stage, strengthening calls for greater women’s leadership and democratic inclusion.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London, Sesay joined global leaders including Julia Gillard and Katharina Samara-Wickrama for a discussion on “From Grassroots to Political Authority: Amplifying Women’s Voices in Sierra Leone.”

During the event, Sesay presented her study report on the barriers to women’s political participation, emphasizing that the issue is not about competence.

 

“Women’s political participation is not a capacity issue; it is a question of power, protection, and resources,” she said.

 

She also expressed pride in being nominated as the second Change Maker Fellow of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership, reinforcing her commitment to advancing women’s leadership in Sierra Leone.

 

Sesay called for stronger implementation of the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act, stressing that inclusive democracy requires structural transformation.
