Authorities at Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology in Makeni have apprehended a man accused of posing as a lecturer and collecting money from students under false pretenses.
The suspect, identified as Abass Sesay, was reportedly caught earlier today by the Students’ Union Government at the university’s Makeni campus after several complaints from students.
According to reports from the campus, the man allegedly pretended to be a lecturer and convinced a number of students to pay money in exchange for academic assistance. Students were reportedly promised scholarships, help with examinations, and other academic favors if they paid certain fees.
Sources within the student body said suspicion began to grow when some students started questioning his identity and the promises he was making. Concerns were then reported to the leadership of the Students’ Union Government, who began making inquiries into the matter.
The situation later led to the suspect being apprehended by the student leadership.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of the Students’ Union Government of Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology confirmed that the union intervened after discovering that the suspect had been collecting money from unsuspecting students.
According to the student leader, the union acted quickly in order to prevent more students from falling victim to the alleged scam.
He explained that protecting students from exploitation remains a priority for the union and that any attempt to take advantage of students will be taken seriously.
Several students on campus expressed shock over the incident, noting that many young people are often desperate for opportunities such as scholarships and academic support. Some said this makes them vulnerable to individuals who present themselves as officials or lecturers.
University sources say the suspect has been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation into the matter.Fake Lecturer Arrested for Alleged Student Scam at EBKUST
