The newly appointed Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone ECSL, Edmond Sylvester Alpha, has invited the leadership of the All People’s Congress to a formal meeting at the Commission’s headquarters in Freetown.
The invitation was conveyed in a letter addressed to the APC Chairman, in which Mr Alpha formally announced his assumption of office as Chief Electoral Commissioner, Chairman, and National Returning Officer. He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with the role and expressed his determination to uphold integrity in the country’s electoral processes.
Mr Alpha stated that his leadership will be guided by principles of fairness, transparency, and professionalism. He noted that the Electoral Commission must continue to serve as a trusted institution that guarantees credible and inclusive elections for all Sierra Leoneans.
“As the substantive Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman, I am deeply committed to ensuring that the Commission remains a beacon of fairness and professionalism,” he said in the letter.
The planned meeting with the APC is scheduled to take place between March 23 and April 10, 2026. It forms part of a broader series of consultations with all registered political parties across the country. The initiative is intended to foster engagement and strengthen working relationships between the Commission and political stakeholders.
According to Mr Alpha, the discussions will focus on sharing his vision for the Commission, providing updates on ongoing electoral activities, and outlining the strategic roadmap toward the 2028 General Elections. He emphasized the importance of early dialogue in addressing concerns and building consensus ahead of the electoral cycle.
Political observers say the move signals a willingness by the new Commission leadership to promote openness and inclusiveness in its operations. They note that regular engagement with political parties is essential in enhancing trust and reducing tensions often associated with electoral processes.
Mr Alpha further stressed that inclusive dialogue is key to building confidence in the electoral system. He added that transparency and cooperation between the Commission and political actors will play a vital role in ensuring peaceful and credible elections.
The Electoral Commission has, in recent years, faced increasing public scrutiny, making stakeholder engagement a priority for its new leadership. By reaching out to the APC and other political parties, Mr Alpha aims to create a platform for constructive discussions that will support democratic governance.
The upcoming meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for both the Commission and the APC leadership to exchange views, raise concerns, and contribute to shaping a credible electoral framework for the 2028 elections.
