The Government of Sierra Leone has confirmed that Guinean authorities are conducting operations targeting informal settlements and undocumented migrants in the capital, Conakry, leading to the return of hundreds of Sierra Leonean nationals.

According to official updates, Sierra Leoneans found with valid documentation during the operations have been released, while those without proper papers are being repatriated through coordinated efforts between the two countries. The government emphasized that the process is being managed in a structured and humane manner.

So far, a total of 942 Sierra Leonean citizens, including women and children, have arrived at the Kambia border. Authorities say arrangements have been put in place to receive the returnees and provide necessary assistance as they re-enter the country.

Officials noted that the repatriation process is being carried out with a focus on dignity and safety. Returnees are being screened upon arrival to assess their immediate needs and ensure proper documentation before they are supported back to their respective communities.

The government stated that it is working closely with its Guinean counterparts to maintain order throughout the exercise. Both sides have committed to ensuring that the process respects the rights of those affected while addressing concerns related to migration and security.

The development follows reports that Guinean security forces have intensified operations in certain urban areas identified as informal settlements. These areas are believed to host a significant number of undocumented migrants, prompting authorities to take action as part of broader efforts to regulate residency and address social challenges.

In its communication, the Government of Sierra Leone reassured the public that it is actively monitoring the situation and engaging diplomatically with the Government of Guinea to safeguard the welfare of its citizens. Officials stressed that continuous dialogue between the two countries remains key to managing the situation effectively.

Authorities have also urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. They encouraged the public to rely on official updates as the situation evolves, noting that misinformation could create unnecessary panic.

Humanitarian support is being provided at reception points, with agencies working alongside government officials to assist returnees. This includes basic medical checks, temporary shelter where necessary, and arrangements for onward transportation.

Community leaders in border areas have also been engaged to facilitate the reintegration of those returning. The government highlighted the importance of local support systems in helping returnees settle back into their communities after what may have been a difficult experience.

Observers say the situation underscores the need for continued cooperation between neighboring countries on migration issues. Managing cross border movements, they note, requires a balance between enforcement and the protection of human rights.

As more updates are expected in the coming days, authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that all returning citizens are treated with respect and provided with the support needed to rebuild their lives.
