The ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party has expressed strong confidence in its chances of winning the 2028 general elections, while sharply criticizing the main opposition All Peoples Congress over its recent political stance.
Speaking during an interview on AYV, SLPP Publicity Secretary, Moses Mambu, stated that the opposition party poses no real threat to the ruling party’s electoral prospects. He maintained that the APC is fully aware of its position and will not come close to winning the next elections.
According to Mambu, the actions and statements coming from the opposition are part of a broader attempt to distract the public from what he described as their lack of preparedness for the 2028 polls. He argued that the APC is already laying the groundwork to challenge the outcome of the elections in advance.
“The APC knows us. They will not come near the 2028 elections,” he said. “All they are doing now is creating distractions because they know they cannot win.”
Mambu further claimed that the opposition’s strategy is to raise concerns and question processes ahead of time so that they can later justify claims of unfairness if the results do not go in their favor. He insisted that such tactics will not affect the confidence of the ruling party.
He also emphasized that the SLPP remains determined to secure victory in the next electoral cycle, noting that the party is fully prepared both politically and strategically. According to him, losing the 2028 elections is not an option the party is considering.
“The SLPP will not afford to lose the next election,” Mambu said, underscoring the party’s resolve to retain power.
The SLPP official also pointed to the role of the party’s national leadership in shaping its election strategy. He referenced statements by the party’s chairman, Jimmy Batilo Songa, who has indicated his readiness to actively engage in public discussions on governance and electoral matters.
Mambu suggested that once the chairman begins addressing the media more frequently, it will further demonstrate the party’s preparedness and strengthen its position ahead of the elections. He added that such engagements will highlight the achievements of the government and counter opposition narratives.
The comments come at a time of increasing political tension in the country, with both major parties positioning themselves ahead of the 2028 polls. Analysts say early rhetoric from both sides reflects the importance of the upcoming elections and the high stakes involved.
While the APC has yet to formally respond to Mambu’s remarks, political observers note that exchanges of this nature are likely to intensify as the election period approaches.
For many citizens, the focus remains on how political parties will address key national issues, including governance, economic development, and public service delivery. Observers continue to call for issue based politics and constructive engagement as Sierra Leone prepares for another electoral cycle.
