Speaking during the high profile event, Dr Gilpin engaged in a strategic conversation with Nabeela Tunis, where both emphasized that national progress depends largely on the passion, dedication and collective efforts of citizens. He noted that meaningful development cannot be achieved without a shared sense of responsibility among the people.

Dr Gilpin highlighted the significance of community initiatives, describing the coastal boat race as more than just a sporting competition. According to him, such events provide an opportunity to strengthen unity, promote cultural identity and inspire young people to contribute positively to society.

He stressed that institutions, including the banking sector, have a role to play in supporting grassroots development efforts, but added that real transformation must be driven by the people themselves. He encouraged communities to harness their strengths and work together toward common goals.

The grand final brought together eight coastal communities including Kroo Bay, Susan’s Bay, Moa Wharf, Banana Water, Portee Wharf, Ferry Terminal and Lakkah, all competing in a lively and closely contested race. The teams demonstrated skill, coordination and resilience, drawing loud cheers from spectators who gathered along the shoreline.

The atmosphere was electric as supporters rallied behind their respective communities, creating a sense of unity and friendly competition. The event served as a platform for bringing people together across different backgrounds, reinforcing social bonds within coastal areas.

Organizers noted that the competition continues to grow in scale and impact, with increasing participation and interest each year. They emphasized that beyond entertainment, the race plays a vital role in engaging young people and promoting positive community values.

Nabeela Tunis also echoed Dr Gilpin’s message, stressing the need for sustained commitment to national development. She pointed out that when citizens are actively involved, communities become stronger and more resilient.

Participants and observers alike praised the event for its role in fostering teamwork, discipline and mutual respect. Many described it as a powerful example of how local initiatives can contribute to broader national objectives.

Dr Gilpin concluded by urging Sierra Leoneans to remain united and proactive in their efforts to uplift the country, noting that progress depends on the collective will of the people.

The Sierra Leone Coastal Boat Race once again highlighted the power of community engagement, leaving a lasting impression of unity, determination and hope for national growth.
