SEND Sierra Leone is strengthening women’s economic empowerment and financial inclusion in rural communities through its More Than a Woman Project, an initiative supported by Irish Aid.
The project is making notable impact in Kurubonla community, Neya Chiefdom, Falaba District, where women are gaining financial skills, improving their livelihoods, and participating actively in community development processes.
As part of its ongoing interventions, SEND Sierra Leone facilitated a Village Savings and Loans Association share out exercise for the Woman Go Before VSLA Group, marking the successful completion of their first savings cycle. The event highlighted the effectiveness of community based savings schemes in building resilience among women.
At the end of the cycle, the group recorded total savings of forty nine thousand seven hundred and sixty eight leones. The achievement reflects strong financial discipline, teamwork, and commitment, all of which have been nurtured through continuous training and support provided under the project.
Through the share out, members received their individual savings and profits, enabling them to invest in small businesses, support their families, and improve their living conditions. Beneficiaries noted that the VSLA model introduced by SEND Sierra Leone has enhanced their capacity to manage finances and plan for the future.
The organization’s approach goes beyond savings, combining financial empowerment with social transformation. Members acknowledged that the social fund component of the VSLA has been instrumental in providing emergency support and helping to expand small scale enterprises.
Participants expressed appreciation to SEND Sierra Leone for its consistent engagement and technical support, stating that the project has increased their confidence and strengthened their ability to take control of their economic activities.
Encouraged by the progress achieved, the group unanimously agreed to begin a second savings cycle. This step reflects growing trust in the VSLA system and the long term benefits of the initiative.
In addition to financial empowerment, SEND Sierra Leone used the platform to promote awareness on Gender Model Family principles, encouraging shared household responsibilities and equal participation in decision making. These discussions are aimed at fostering more inclusive and supportive family structures within communities.
The session also addressed the negative impact of harmful cultural practices, with participants encouraged to challenge norms that hinder the growth and potential of women and girls.
Furthermore, the organization emphasized the importance of financial inclusion by encouraging members to access formal banking services through the Mongo Bendugu Credit Union. Access to such services is expected to enhance savings security and create opportunities for business growth.
Through the More Than a Woman Project, SEND Sierra Leone continues to demonstrate its commitment to empowering women, strengthening communities, and promoting sustainable development in rural areas.
