Residents of Calabatown, K Step, Alpha Terrace, were left in shock on Thursday afternoon after a residential building collapsed, destroying property and displacing affected families.
The incident caused panic in the community as the building suddenly gave way, prompting residents and passersby to rush to the scene. Neighbours worked together to assist occupants and ensure that everyone inside the building was safely evacuated.
Despite the extent of the damage, no deaths or serious injuries were reported.
However, several families lost valuable household items in the collapse. Furniture, personal belongings and other property were either damaged or buried beneath the rubble, leaving the affected residents facing significant financial losses.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as frightening, with residents rushing to help those who were inside while others tried to recover some of their belongings from the debris.
Community members remained at the scene as efforts were made to assess the situation and determine the extent of the damage.
The exact cause of the building collapse was not immediately known. Authorities are expected to carry out an assessment and investigation to establish what caused the structure to fail and whether possible construction or structural problems contributed to the incident.
The collapse has renewed concerns among residents about the safety of some buildings in the community and the need for regular inspection of residential structures.
Residents have called on the relevant authorities to take the incident seriously and ensure that buildings in vulnerable areas are properly assessed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
They also appealed to the Government, National Disaster Management Agency, Freetown City Council and other humanitarian organisations to provide urgent support to families affected by the collapse.
Some of the affected residents are now faced with the challenge of finding temporary accommodation while trying to recover from the loss of their belongings.
Community members said the incident could have resulted in a much greater tragedy if people had been trapped inside the building when it collapsed.
They expressed relief that no lives were lost, describing the absence of fatalities as a blessing despite the extensive destruction caused by the incident.
The affected families are now appealing for assistance as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives following the collapse.
The incident also serves as a reminder of the importance of enforcing building regulations and conducting regular inspections, particularly in densely populated communities.
Residents say stronger monitoring and timely intervention by the relevant authorities could help identify unsafe structures before they collapse and put lives at risk.
