Hon. Mariama Munia Zombo, Member of Parliament for Pujehun District, has been recognised among Sierra Leone’s 50 Most Influential Women for her contribution to leadership, legislation, women’s empowerment and social advocacy.

The recognition was presented to Hon. Zombo at the Bintumani Conference Centre in Freetown, where she joined other women recognised for their influence and contribution to national development.

Speaking after receiving the honour, Hon. Zombo described the recognition as a call to greater service and responsibility.

She said the award was not something she took for granted, noting that it reminded her to remain committed to serving her constituents and the wider public.

“In the midst of my trials and joys, I pulled through and got recognised. Thanks be to God for His mercies and guidance,” she said.

Hon. Zombo dedicated the recognition to Mama Haja Miniatu Konneh, whom she described as the woman who moulded her and helped shape the values that have guided her journey.

As a parliamentarian, Hon. Zombo has become a strong voice on issues affecting women and children. Her legislative work includes her role in advancing the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2024.

She sponsored and moved a landmark Private Member’s Bill aimed at strengthening legal protection for children against early and forced marriage.

Beyond child protection, Hon. Zombo has also advocated stronger measures against sexual offenders. She has called for people convicted of sexual offences to be permanently disqualified from contesting parliamentary elections, even if they have subsequently received a presidential pardon.

Her advocacy has also focused on increasing women’s participation in politics and decision making. She has called for a more gender inclusive constitutional framework, increased financial support for female politicians and reserved parliamentary seats for women.

Hon. Zombo has further expressed support for the Proportional Representation system, arguing that it could help address the marginalisation of women and create more opportunities for women to participate in political leadership.

Her recognition among Sierra Leone’s 50 Most Influential Women comes as she continues to use her position in Parliament to advocate for women, children and greater inclusion in national leadership.

The honour adds to her growing profile as a parliamentarian whose work combines legislation, advocacy and public service, while highlighting the increasing role of women in shaping Sierra Leone’s political and social development.
