An African Union (AU) Assessment Team has arrived in Freetown to evaluate the Sierra Leone Police’s (SLP) sixth Formed Police Unit (FPU-6) as they prepare for deployment to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). The assessment follows three months of intensive training aimed at ensuring the unit’s operational readiness for peacekeeping duties.

The AU team, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Lithakong Ntpaba, met with Sierra Leone’s Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, to outline the evaluation process, which will be conducted in two phases. The first phase focuses on individual readiness, including language proficiency, driving and shooting competencies, age compliance, and medical fitness. The second phase will assess the unit’s overall operational capabilities, essential for performing effectively in Somalia’s challenging environment.

ACP Ntpaba commended the SLP for its support and highlighted an increase in female personnel within the unit, noting this positive trend in gender representation in peacekeeping forces. “Our assessment will rigorously evaluate each member to ensure readiness and compliance with AU standards,” Ntpaba emphasized.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Lillian Okembo expressed gratitude for the leadership provided by IGP Sellu, as well as the role of ATMIS Police Commissioner, AIG Hailary Sao Kanu, in enhancing Sierra Leone’s reputation in international peacekeeping. She noted Sierra Leone’s achievement in contributing two consecutive police commissioners to ATMIS, a testament to the SLP’s professionalism and commitment.

IGP Sellu welcomed the AU team, stressing the historic importance of Sierra Leone’s role in peacekeeping. He highlighted that the deployment honors those who served during Sierra Leone’s civil war and reflects the country’s ongoing dedication to global peace efforts. He also noted the beneficial impact of previous deployments on the SLP’s capacity to address domestic security challenges.

The meeting concluded with the presentation of a commemorative souvenir to IGP Sellu by UN AU Police Reform Advisor Alex M. Dili.
