Two female genital mutilators, known as ‘soweis’, are in police custody helping the police with investigations into an alleged FGM/cutting on a newly born baby, which resulted in her painful death.Regional Commander of Sierra Leone Police Freetown East, Assistant Inspector General Aiah Edward Samadia disclosed in a police press briefing held on Friday 2 September 2022 that based on investigations conducted by the police, the baby was born on Wednesday 17 August 2022, at Old Railway Line, Lumpa, Waterloo in the Western Rural District, and immediately after her birth, a certain group of women performed FGM on the child which “led to her death”.
He said the investigation was in progress and the police would duly inform the media about the outcome of their findings.
