Director of Traffic, Sierra Leone Police (SLP) AIG Manfred Williams has disclosed that about fifty commercial drivers have been dragged to court for violating various sections of the Road Traffic Act, ranging from over speed and loading, driving and stopping in unauthorized areas, dropping of passengers halfway among others.
According to AIG Williams, defaulters are mainly bus and minivan drivers who were arrested within the central business district of Freetown.
He told FORUM NEWS SL that the reason behind the operation is to maintain law and order in the traffic sector, especially within the CBD area.
AIG Williams added that of late drivers have been so lawless to a point that they have no regard for traffic rules. He said that drivers always do things at will as if there is no law in the country.
The senior police officer stressed that such lawlessness is not only affecting the free flow of traffic but equally causing a lot of road accidents that most times claim the lives of innocent citizens.
He informed that before the start of the operation, the police held an engagement with both commercial drivers and riders to disassociate themselves from lawlessness.
