The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) has strongly condemned all forms of violence ahead of June 24 polls while urged citizens to maintain peace throughout the electioneering period.
In a press release dated 21 June 2023, ICPNC expressed concerned about recent incidents of violence citing the burning of houses and party offices in different parts of the country.
The release continued that such occurrences only undermine the democratic process and further poses threat towards the stability and unity of the country.
ICPNC therefore denounced such actions and urged all political parties, presidential and mayoral candidates and citizenry of the country to refrain from all forms of violence and embrace dialogue as means constructive means of resolving their differences.
The release furthered that the commission, as an independent institution entrusted with fostering national cohesion, recognize the essence of free and fair elections as a cornerstone of democracy.
The release also noted furthered that political leaders, supporters and the public to abide by the principles of peaceful coexistence, respect for the Rule of Law, and the democratic values upon which Sierra Leone is built.
ICPNC further urged political parties and their supporters to engage in constructive and inclusive dialogue by focusing on policies, ideas and solutions that will contribute to the overall development and progress of Sierra Leone.
“We call upon all political parties to prioritize the welfare and interests of the citizens over partisan ambitions,” the statement indicated.
ICPNC is appealing to the Sierra Leone Police and another security authorities to endure the safety and security of all citizens during the election period and perform their duties with utmost professionalism, impartiality and in full accordance with the law.
The commission believes that a peaceful and inclusive electoral process is vital for the future of the country. The commission affirmed that they stand ready to provide its support, guidance and mediation towards facilitating a peaceful dialogue and resolve any disputes that may arise during this period.
The release calls on Sierra Leoneans to embrace the spirit of unity, tolerance and respect in diversity.
“Let us work together to ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible electoral process that will strengthen the democratic foundations of our nation and contribute to the continued progress and prosperity of Sierra Leone,” the release concluded.
