The host Nation in this year’s Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON), Ivory Coast, has booked their position to the last eight in this year’s tournament after defeating the Teranger Lions of Senegal in dramatic 5-4 post match penalties.
The match took place on 29 January 2024 at Yamoussoukro. The Teranger lions of Senegal started the match with high intensity which gave them an early lead in the 4th minute by a goal scored by Diallo. The host nation fought with all their might and got an equalising goal from the penalty spot by a goal scored by Franck Kessie.
Before the match, a lot of football loving fans were predicted that Senegal was going to make it through the quarter final stage considering their performance in the group stage. Senegal qualified with 9 points while the host Nation managed to squeeze into the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams from the group phase.
The Elephants’ quarter-final on Saturday will play against the winner of the match between Mali or Burkina Faso.
