The newly approved Commissioner- General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Jeneba Kpaka Bangura (Mrs.) is a familiar name within the Country’s tax administration and system. Mrs. Bangura served as Deputy Commisoner General from November 2018 to July 2023 and was primarily responsible for the management of all digitalization programs that phased out most manual processes into full digital outcomes at the NRA.
Mrs. Bangura is an astute financial management expert with over 25 years’ experience in public and financial policy and accounting in government, private and non- profit sectors. She is a Certified Public Accountant and has a Masters degree in Public Administration.
Prior to her appointment as Commissioner General, Jeneba Kpaka Bangura has for the last five months served as Deputy Minister of Finance 1, at the Ministry of Finance. As an experienced tax Administrator, Jeneba Kpaka Bangura is a serving member of the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) Women Tax Network (AWTIN) and was most recently elected as Vice- Chair for the AWTIN Board.
Mrs. Kpaka Bangura is the second female to hold the position of Commissioner General after Haja Kallah Kamara who served in the position from 2009 – 2018. With her deep experience in the Sierra Leone Tax Administration, Public Finance and Accounting, coupled with her experience in working for the State Comptroller’s Office of New York and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority- which is arguably the largest public transportation system in North America, Mrs. Jeneba Kpaka Bangura is set to turn the tides at the NRA.
Many have described Jeneba Kpaka Bangura as somone with stunning, innovative and unorthodox managerial abilities. She simultaneously managed multiple reforms at the NRA when she served as Deputy Commsioner General.
With her unerring professionalism, devout energy and rather calm temperament, it is expected that the NRA will experience a lot of growth and development.
During her approval session, Parliamentarians called on the new Commissioner General to improve the revenue generation efforts, and to institute professional standards in the country’s tax administration.
