The June 24 2023 general elections was surrounded by a lot of irregularities that led to the mediated dialogue between the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) to break the political stalemate in the country, with the Commonwealth, the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) overseeing as negotiators.

Kudos to the main opposition and the citizens of Sierra Leone for allowing Peace to reign in our Nation. As Sierra Leoneans are eagerly waiting for the outcome of the almighty Tripartite Committee, we need to know and acknowledge the fact that peace should always be at the apex of everything in our nation. It could be recalled that the Tripartite Committee was set up sometime last year (2023) to examine and review the outcome of the June 24 national polls and other previous democratic elections and make the necessary recommendations that would be implemented. The committee was given a timeframe of six months to do their findings. However, irrespective of the outcome of the Tripartite Committee’s work, Sierra Leoneans need to be mindful of the peace of the country. We need to remind ourselves that, the November 26 insurrection in the country is still fresh in our minds and also the scars of a bitter civil war are etched deep into our memories reminding us all of the devastating consequences of violence and division.

Today, as the nation patiently waiting the outcome of the Tripartite Committee’s work, members of the public especially members and supporters of the main opposition APC are somehow beaming with hopes of a re-run election in the country, but, whatever the outcome is the peace and stability of the country is cardinal. And to the committee members of the Tripartite, it’s important to know that the choices we make will determine the path toward a brighter future in Sierra Leone. We need to put the country above all else.

Amid this defining moment, we must reflect on the painful lessons of our Sierra Leone in the past decades. Let us remember the innocent lives lost over the years, the families torn apart, and the dreams shattered during the dark days of the conflict. It is this remembrance that must fuel our commitments in our country’s progress.

We must recognise that elections are not merely contests for power, but rather the bedrock of democracy, but at present elections are over, it is time for the Tripartite Committee to come up with their recommendations and this is where we need to do things that the international world would look at us and know that we really practicalized the democracy itself. The Tripartite is an opportunity for citizens to trust the laws of the land and it could also be of help to voice and shape the destiny of the nation. It is a privilege that should never be taken for granted, especially for a country that has emerged from the ashes of war, yearning for stability and progress.

It is easy to succumb to the politics of division and resort to inflammatory rhetoric that stokes animosity. But, let us remember that the true strength of our nation lies in its diversity, and it’s of essence to note that the rich tapestry of cultures, beliefs, and aspirations that define us would be written again and so we must try to maintain peace and try to implement the recommendation fully for the betterment of our democracy.

To the citizens of Sierra Leone, I implore us all to exercise patience and wait for this Tripartite Committee outcome. Let us reject violence, intimidation of any kind and any attempts to undermine the integrity of the tripartite process. Instead, let us engage in constructive dialogue, respect differing and divergence views and opinions, and work towards a future where every voice is heard and every opinion counts.

The world is watching Sierra Leone. Our journey towards a peaceful but accurate Tripartite is not only a testament to our resilience but also an inspiration for other nations grappling with similar challenges. We have the opportunity to be a shining example of a society that refuses to let its past define its future—a society that embraces reconciliation, forgiveness, and inclusivity.

At this moment, let us draw strength from the stories of ordinary Sierra Leoneans who, despite the horrors they have witnessed, continue to demonstrate unwavering hope. They are the true heroes, and their unwavering determination to rebuild their lives and communities should serve as a guiding light for us all.

Sierra Leonean, let us come together as one nation, one people and pave the way for a peaceful and transformative Tripartite. Let us show the world that we have learned from our painful history, and we are committed to building a future where every Sierra Leonean can thrive, regardless of tribe, religion, or political affiliation.

May the spirit of unity guide us, the flame of peace illuminate our path, and the collective will of our people propel us toward a brighter and more prosperous Sierra Leone. “Na wan Salon we get”.
