Lawyer A. Babatunde Davies John has on Monday 19th June 2023, registered his disappointment over certain senior lawyer in the habits of disrespecting and bulling junior lawyers for unjust reasons.
Lawyer John made this statement at the Pademba Road Magistrate Court No. 1 presided over by Magistrate Sarh Kekura.
According to lawyer John, he was aggravated because lawyer Sydney Campbell discouraged him after he rebuked him to seat down and allowed senior lawyers to first mention their matters before the court.
In his respond, lawyer John, objected to the matter in which he was rebuked by the senior lawyer in an open, which he said is on called for, especially when his motive was just mentioned the case of the person is was representing.
He went on to say that though C. Campbell should treat him with respect because he is older than him.
He encouraged senior lawyers to treat junior lawyers with the respect they when addressing them.
“My Lord, some of the senior lawyers use the seniority powers to mob juniors’’. lawyer John told the Bench.
He added that he had remain patient in most of his approaches when in the bar but noted that what most senior counsels are doing is beyond expectations.
In response, lawyer Campbell alluded to the fact the legal profession is important and enlightening in a society cannot be overstressed.
Adding that, the court system is predominantly passionate about seniority and the bar is the medium of accentuating the fundamental element of seniority.
In his response, Magistrate Kekura admonished litigants come and go, and as a result, lawyers should not allow litigants’ mattes brought disputes between lawyers.
He admonished both counsels to be patient with matters concerning litigants, he continued, junior lawyers should know that seniors are around and that junior should learned from them.
He told the court that seniority in law is not by age but by calling, noting respect and greetings are basically reciprocal while called on both counsel to settle their encounters.
Magistrate, Kekura adjourned the matter that to 3rd July ,2023.
