As the political landscape in Sierra Leone begins to shift towards the 2028 elections, the All People’s Congress (APC), the country’s main opposition party, finds itself at a critical crossroads. With leadership challenges looming, the pressing question among party members and supporters remains ‘who will emerge as the next Presidential candidate for the APC party?’
The APC has historically been known for its strong and competitive internal politics, and this time is no different. Several high-profile figures within the party have already been rumored to have Presidential ambitions, each with their unique strengths, track records, and support bases. With the contest expected to be highly competitive, let’s take a closer look at some of the key names being floated as potential flagbearers.
The party has Dr. Samura Kamara. The big question is, will he Run Again?
Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara, who led the APC into two consecutive elections, remains a dominant figure in the party. Though he lost the 2018 and 2023 elections to the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), many within the APC still believe he is the best candidate to take on the ruling party in 2028.
Rumors have been swirling that Dr. Kamara is considering a third bid for the Presidency. However, the biggest question is whether the APC hierarchy will grant him another chance. Some argue that he still commands a strong following and has the experience needed to unify the party, while others believe it’s time for fresh leadership for the party.
Another one is Dr. Richard Konteh who is known as The Unifier.
Dr. Richard Konteh is another heavyweight contender. His supporters believe he is the only leader capable of reclaiming power from the ruling SLPP. They describe him as a visionary leader with the strength, knowledge, and determination to steer the party forward.
Dr. Konteh has built a reputation for fighting for the underprivileged, advocating for reforms, and championing freedom. With a strong grassroots movement behind him, his candidacy could pose a significant challenge to other aspirants within the APC party.
Hon. Chernor Bah (Chericoco). Hon. Chernor Bah, fondly known as Chericoco, is another formidable candidate. He served as the running mate to Dr. Samura Kamara in the past elections and has played a pivotal role in keeping the party together during challenging times.
Chericoco’s supporters believe that his dedication to the APC, financial contributions, and unwavering loyalty makes him the perfect candidate. His youthful energy and deep connection with the grassroots also gives him a strategic advantage, making him a strong contender in the race.
Another key figure is Dr. Kaifala Marah. Dr. Kaifala Marah is another influential figure within the APC who is expected to throw his hat in the ring. As a former Minister of Finance and Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone, he brings extensive economic expertise that could appeal to both party members and voters.
His calm and strategic approach to politics has earned him respect within the party, and while he may not be as vocal as some of his counterparts, his strong financial and administrative background makes him a serious contender.
Moreover, we have Dr. Ibrahim Bangura who has also emerged as a potential flagbearer, with his team portraying him as the leader who embodies the values of peace, love, unity, and progress.
His supporters believe that he has the ability to bring different factions of the APC together and lead the party towards a brighter future.
With the APC often facing internal divisions, a candidate who can foster unity will be crucial in ensuring the party’s success in 2028.
Another tough contender is Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK).
Commonly known as JFK, he is another heavyweight in the race. As the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, as well as the legal representative for former President Ernest Bai Koroma, he is a well-respected figure within the party.
JFK’s experience in fighting corruption during his tenure as the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) boss gives him a unique edge. His deep understanding of the legal system and governance makes him a strong candidate who could offer a fresh approach to leadership within the APC.
In addition, we have Dr. Suphian Kalokoh.
Dr. Suphian Kalokoh is another name making rounds in APC circles. A former president of the Fourah Bay College Students Union and the current Chairman of APC USA-Chapter, he has strong ties both locally and internationally.
Dr. Kalokoh’s supporters believe his diverse background, hailing from Port Loko while having strong connections in the southeast- Kenema district, positions him as a candidate who can bridge regional divides within the party.
Madam Diana Konomanyi is another not to be dismissed with a wave of the hand.
In a race historically dominated by men, Madam Diana Konomanyi stands out as a powerful female contender. A seasoned politician and one of the most vibrant women in the APC, she has the experience, charisma, and grassroots support to make a serious bid for the party’s flagbearership.
Her candidacy would not only energize female participation in politics but also signal a shift towards greater gender inclusivity within the APC.
As the 2028 elections draw closer, the APC faces a tough decision in choosing a candidate who can unite the party, inspire the electorate, and take on the ruling SLPP.
While Dr. Samura Kamara remains a strong possibility, fresh faces like Dr. Richard Konteh, Chericoco, and JFK could inject new energy into the party.
Meanwhile, contenders like Dr. Kaifala Marah, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, Dr. Suphian Kalokoh, and Madam Diana Konomanyi offer alternative leadership visions that could shape the future of the APC.
With the official flagbearer selection process expected to begin next year, party members and supporters will be watching closely to see who emerges as the leader to carry APC’s hopes into the 2028 elections.
One thing is certain: this will be one of the most fiercely contested leadership battles in the history of the APC party.
