The Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone ECSL Edmond Sylvester Alpha has stressed that election outcomes in the country are determined solely by the will of the people, reaffirming the Commission’s neutral role in the democratic process.
Speaking during a meeting of the Political Parties Liaison Committee, Alpha made it clear that neither the Commission nor its commissioners have the authority to influence or decide election results. He said the ECSL remains committed to upholding the principles of transparency credibility and fairness in all electoral activities.
Alpha explained that the responsibility of the Commission is to provide a level playing field for all political actors while ensuring that citizens are able to exercise their right to vote freely. He emphasized that the integrity of any election depends on the trust of the people and the confidence that their votes will count.
He described the ballot box as the true expression of the people’s sovereignty noting that leadership choices must come directly from voters without interference from any institution or individual. According to him this principle remains the foundation of Sierra Leone’s democratic system and must be respected by all stakeholders.
The ECSL Chairman also used the opportunity to highlight the importance of dialogue among political parties. He noted that consistent engagement through platforms such as the Political Parties Liaison Committee plays a vital role in addressing concerns and promoting mutual understanding among stakeholders.
Alpha said constructive discussions help to reduce tension and build confidence in the electoral process especially during periods leading up to national elections. He urged political actors to continue engaging in peaceful dialogue and to prioritize national interest over partisan considerations.
Looking ahead to the 2028 general elections Alpha called for timely and inclusive electoral reforms. He encouraged political parties civil society groups and other stakeholders to actively participate in shaping policies that will strengthen the electoral system.
He pointed out that reforms are necessary to improve efficiency inclusiveness and public trust in the process. He added that early preparation will ensure that any changes are properly implemented before the next election cycle begins.
Alpha further assured stakeholders that the ECSL remains committed to delivering elections that are peaceful credible and transparent. He said the Commission will continue to operate with accountability while maintaining its independence from political influence.
Participants at the meeting welcomed his remarks describing them as a strong reassurance of the Commission’s commitment to democratic principles. Some stakeholders noted that clear communication from the ECSL is essential in addressing public concerns and preventing misinformation.
Observers say Alpha’s statement comes at a critical time when public confidence in electoral institutions remains a key issue across many democracies. His emphasis on neutrality and respect for the will of the people is expected to strengthen trust in the country’s electoral system.
As preparations gradually begin toward the next general elections the ECSL’s position signals a continued focus on transparency dialogue and reforms aimed at deepening democracy in Sierra Leone.
