Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, has joined global policymakers and education leaders in New York for discussions on the growing role of artificial intelligence in education.

The discussions are taking place during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly at Scandinavia House under the theme, “Education Systems in the Age of AI: What’s Changed, What’s Next?”

The high level engagement is bringing together stakeholders from different parts of the world to examine how education systems can respond to the rapid development of artificial intelligence.

The discussions are being convened through the Digital Transformation Collaborative, with participants focusing on several issues linked to the use of technology in education.

Key areas under discussion include AI readiness, digital infrastructure, teacher capacity, innovation, data, partnerships and access to technology.

Dr. Sengeh’s participation provides Sierra Leone with an opportunity to share its experience and perspectives on the role of digital transformation in improving education and developing human capital.

The engagement also comes at a time when governments and education institutions are examining how artificial intelligence could affect teaching, learning and the skills required by young people entering an increasingly digital economy.

For Sierra Leone, discussions around AI and education are closely linked to the country’s efforts to expand digital opportunities and strengthen human capital development.

The Chief Minister’s participation allows the country to engage with international partners on ways technology can support education reforms and create new opportunities for young people.

The discussions are also expected to consider some of the challenges associated with the growing use of artificial intelligence, including the need for adequate digital infrastructure, trained teachers, responsible use of data and equitable access to technology.

Participants are examining how education systems can prepare learners for changes in the workplace while ensuring that technological progress does not leave disadvantaged communities behind.

The UNGA 81 engagement forms part of wider international discussions on the future of education in the age of artificial intelligence.

As AI continues to develop rapidly, policymakers are under increasing pressure to determine how schools and education systems can adapt while maintaining quality, inclusion and responsible use of technology.

Sierra Leone’s participation in the discussions places the country within the broader global conversation on education and digital transformation.

The engagement is expected to strengthen dialogue between Sierra Leone and international partners as the country explores opportunities to use technology to improve education, support young people and advance its wider development goals.
