The Government of Sierra Leone in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) has officially launched the WFP Country Strategic Plan for 2026 to 2030, setting out a comprehensive roadmap to strengthen food systems, improve nutrition and build resilience across the country.
The launch event, held in Freetown, brought together senior government officials, United Nations heads of agencies, development partners and representatives of civil society. The gathering highlighted the growing importance of food security as a central pillar of Sierra Leone’s national development agenda.
Officials at the event emphasized that the new strategic plan reflects a shared commitment to addressing food insecurity through coordinated and sustainable interventions. The initiative aims to tackle challenges related to access to food, malnutrition and vulnerability to external shocks such as climate change and economic instability.
The plan is closely aligned with key national and international frameworks, including Sierra Leone’s Medium Term National Development Plan, the Feed Salone strategy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. This alignment is expected to ensure that efforts are streamlined and that resources are effectively utilized to achieve long term impact.
According to stakeholders, the strategy focuses on strengthening agricultural productivity, supporting smallholder farmers and improving food distribution systems. It also places strong emphasis on nutrition, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women, where malnutrition rates remain a concern.
In addition, the plan outlines measures to enhance resilience in communities that are frequently affected by shocks. These include investment in climate smart agriculture, improved early warning systems and social protection programmes designed to support households during periods of crisis.
Speakers at the launch noted that collaboration between government institutions, international partners and local organizations will be critical to the successful implementation of the strategy. They stressed that a multi sectoral approach is necessary to address the complex nature of food insecurity and to ensure that interventions reach those most in need.
Development partners reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Sierra Leone in achieving its food security goals. They pointed out that sustained investment and policy consistency will be essential to delivering meaningful and lasting results.
The launch of the WFP Country Strategic Plan marks a significant step toward strengthening national capacity to respond to food related challenges. It signals a renewed focus on building a more resilient and inclusive food system that can support economic growth and improve the well-being of citizens.
As implementation begins, stakeholders expressed optimism that the coordinated approach outlined in the plan will contribute to reducing hunger and improving nutrition outcomes across Sierra Leone in the coming years.
