According to an article that was published by FOCUS 24/7 NEWSPAPER on the 3th April, 2024, it vividly stated that several residents in Koidu have angrily blast the illegal mining activities of Octea Mining Company. The residents of Koidu have noted with grave concern and several calls on illegal mining activities and the use of child labour in Koidu.

One of the residents told Forum on a phone call: “We are tired of this mining activity. We the affected individuals are inadequately supported by the mining company…”

The illicit exploitation of mineral resources has long-term impacts on the environment, including formation of sinkholes and contamination of the soil, groundwater and surface water. It also results in soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, health risks and even deaths. However, in the context of Sierra Leone, it is not regarded as environment crime.

Before going to press, this medium made several efforts to get the side of the company, however all efforts proved futile.
